Daily Painting: Plant Portraits

The Plant Portrait Series

February 2025

It was winter and it was cold and dark and all through the house there were PLANTS. Plants, plants, plants, everywhere plants, because that’s what happens when you’re a plant person. That’s what happens in the “off season” when all the plants that went outside in the Spring and multiplied, have to come back INSIDE for the Winter.

That’s when home is a jungle.
The reality and shuffle of plant people, I think.

So there I was, February, sitting surrounded by plants, newly returned from a cross country road trip, my plants survived my partner, most of them, and I was thinking: I think I’d like to do another Challenge about art-ing (where I paint something every day for instance. I did that before). And because I am the way I am, I “needed” a theme and I thought about it: what would be a great limitation to explore?! Because limitations are empowering. “Paint anything” is daunting! And that’s when the plants occurred to me; paint what you’re surrounded by and that became the Plant Portrait Series of Winter 2025.

Challenges are always 30 days, so there were 30 paintings but a few are missing and I added a bonus couple

So 1-30 are as follows:

1 Somebody Put Aloe in the Corner
2 Jade in February
3 Water Thy Self (yellow / bright version)
4 Aloe in a Vintage Mustard Yellow Pot

minus 5 and 6, because I didn’t like 5 and 6

7 Prayer Plant Praying
8 The Plant Shelf has a Space
9 is it the wallpaper or the plant?
10 Water Thy Self (black blue / dark version)
11 Everything and The Kitchen Sink
12 the morning view at moon light night
13 self portrait of someone I know
14 another jade in February

minus 15 because I don’t know where 15 got off too - there’s a gap in my list

16 someone else’s room
17 where is 17?
18 orange is jade’s new color
19 spotted begonie (angel wings)
20 the night plant circus
21 Begonia Blue
22 Peeping for Plants (city night scape, apartment windows)

minus 23 because I sold 23 before I got an official picture of it. This was the first SELL of this series and I was so excited!

24 mint snake
25 ?
26 ?

27 Triangularis Red
28 Plant Land
29 red triangle on yellow

minus 30 because also missing a number 30

This was a fun series to do. The idea of plants as portraits, then that evolved into plant scapes, like interior landscapes, because afterall, Winter inside is a thing. One day I may live in an area where I can ski and snow hike everyday, but that day is not last Winter.
